Welcome to our website! We are so pleased you have stopped by. We breed for health and temperament and take the AKC standards very seriously. We enforce a spay/neuter on all puppies and adults. I encourage you to check out Dachshund Rescue before adotpting from a breeder. There are many wonderful Dachshunds in need of loving homes.
Have you ever jumped in to something and then the more involved you became the more you wanted to do better at it? That is where I am. I have really tried hard to do a lot of research on breeding and health issues. The more I learn I realize how very little I knew when I started buying dogs. I do not want to raise dogs just to raise dogs. I want to have the best dogs I can and I am willing to do whatever it takes to do that, even if it means starting over. Some people are content with just breeding pet quality dogs. That is fine if that is what they are comfortable with. However, I am not comfortable with that. There are enough pets in the world, just take a look at any Rescue site. Another important point I need to address is that every dog is not destined to be a show dog. That's okay too. However, just because they are not a show quality dog does not mean they can not have superior breeding. That is where careful breeding, pedigrees, DNA, etc. come in. It is all very complicated believe it or not. I am still learning everyday. I do not claim to know it all. I do not claim that what I say is gospel. I do have to live with every action I make and a conscience of doing what's right for a breed that has been nothing but wonderful and loving to me.
Often I am asked "What is the point of showing?" or "What is the point of a pedigree, they are just papers?" I have never been able to put it is words. I have met someone who can. His name is Bernard Robert of Vonbernhart Kennels in Canada and he is in my mind a true steward for the Dachshund breed. He owns a Standard Dachshund named Blaze. I had the privelege of meeting Blaze when a good friend of mine was showing him in the states for Bernard. I had never seen a dog so beautiful not to mention the fact he was bursting with personality. That being said this is what Bernard told me about breeding and showing and the importance of a pedigree.
"I will begin with my favourite boy, my own American, Bermudan, Canadian and International (IABCA) Champion Vonbernhart's Trailbalzer, Junior Earthdog (Canada & USA), better known and loved by those who know him as simply 'Blaze'. I don't know how much you kinow about the extremely rewarding and oft frustrating world of dog breeding. Great dogs are created, like living works of art , to represent the very best of their breed. They are the product of generations of careful planning and most of all perseverance. I bred my first champion in 1976 and have never looked back. Despite the occasional heartbreak and setbacks, I have soldiered on, trying to produce an ever- improving specimen of the breed. My #1 priority has always been TEMPERAMENT! I researched 5 years before deciding which direction my breeding program was to take. I studied pedigrees and tried to see as many dogs in the pedigrees I was researching as I could. Quite often, I was fortunate enough to see the live dogs but sometimes only pictures and their breeders' evaluation of them was available to me. I began with the Bardale bloodlines and have remained with them over the years, bringing new blood as I felt was needed. Pedigrees are not just a bunch of names but represent living animals, with all their qualities and faults that may entail. Blaze is the result of 16 generations of careful breeding on my part and he is I believe as close as I have come so far to producing an ideal dachshund. I hope his sons and daughters surpass him as that is always the goal and a few of them are showing great promise but only time will tell. "
I believe this answers the previous questions. Thank you Bernard!
